Arequipa, Peru
January
2002
Arequipa - a beautiful old colonial town full of churches, monasteries
and Inca mummies. Arequipa is 2325 metres up and gateway to
the famous Canon del Colca, high altitude deserts and wild Peruvian
terrain.
El Misti

El Misti (5822m), the big volcano overlooking the city. Also one
of the Inca/local mountain gods.
Town Square

The Plaza De Armas. the church is beautiful from the outside
although undergoing repair due to some earthquake damage.
Ramone
A few cute pictures of Ramone - an aussie girl we met on the Inca trail
who later met up with Jeremy and I in Arequipa.

On the sundeck of the hostel.

Ramone looking cute.
Sunset in Arequipa

Going...

Going...

Gone.

Errr...attempted arty shot using balcony decoration
Monasterio de Santa Catalina
Probably one of the best religious buildings I have seen in all of my
travels so far. Despite the name, it's not actually a monastery,
it's actually a convent and it covers an entire city block - roughly
20,000 sq meters. And, it's still used today by 20 nuns despite large
sections of it being open to the public.
Anyway...to cut a long story short...the place is like a small town.
It's been lovingly restored and the colours of the building are just
fantastic.

Me, Ramone and Jeremy just inside the entrance.

Courtyard.

Love these cool white walls! A money shot contender.

Guinea pigs. Kept for eating. Mmmmmm....

Plant in a window. A money shot!

Doorway.

Place for having baths and washing clothes.

Another courtyard.

The money shot.
