Lima, Peru

Dec/Jan 2002

Checked out Lima on the last stage of the Peru trip in late January.  It's a pretty place and not as bad as people make out.  You just need to walk around.

And people are generally pretty friendly and willing to assist you in your travels.  Especially the local drug dealers who are trying to sell you a gram of coke or two or three or four for the low low price of USD$10 per gram.  What a bargain!  At that rate, anyone can afford a designer drug habit.  Of course, they could be undercover cops and be caught would be ... well ... in the words of my cousin ... "all bad man!" (said in kiwi twang)

Lima Airport - 23 December Sometime Between 1 And 6 am

We got into Lima from New York at some ungodly hour.  As we were flying out early the next morning to Cuzco, it made no sense to go to a hotel so we stayed in the airport all night.  Great!

Dan taking it easy.

Jeremy looking calm.  Everything is under control.

Downtown Lima

A few photos from my walks around town.  Jeremy and I basically spent about 5-6 days chilling out and going out.

BEMBOS

While we were walking, Jeremy and I discovered quite possibly the world's best burger chain - Bembos.  It's a Peruvian burger chain modelled on McDonalds but serves burgers at least 100 times better than either McDonalds or Burger King have ever managed to produce.  The ingredients are fresh, the burgers are flame grilled (not microwaved like Macas and BKs) and each burger is available in four different sizes (S, M, L, XL).  I had lunch and dinner there for five days straight.  I pretty much worked my way through the entire burger menu.

Final word on Bembos:  If there is a god, he gets his burgers here.  Truly amazing.

Thoughfare through to the Plaza de Armas and la Catedral

La Catedral on the Plaza de Armas

Plaza De Armas

Statue of Francisco Pizzaro in one corner of the Plaza de Armas.  Apparently it's covered over by the local Quechua from time to time in protest at all the destruction, slaughter and exploitation associated with the Spanish Conquest in the 1600s.

Presidential palace on the Plaza de Armas.

San Francisco church.  Famous for it's catecombs.

Skull and bone display inside the catacombs.

Plaza San Martin

Peruvian Police Biker Chicks

I don't know what it is but all of the traffic police on motorcycles seem to be female and dressed up like something out of that old 70's series CHiPs .... complete with full dress Harley Davidsons.  All good.

Lover's Park At Mira Flores

This statue and park was built quite recently to celebrate peace, love and happiness...and also an end to the guerrilla war ... or something like that.  Anyway, it's pretty cool and the view out onto the beach and ocean is spectacular as well.

Lover's statue.  She is wearing panties just in case you are interested.  We looked.
