La Roche-en-Ardenne
Belgium, April 2005
We stayed overnight in La Roche-en-Ardenne after a long and slightly winding drive over from Luxembourg.
The journey was long and
winding mainly because we were lost and had no idea where we were on the
map. Each new signpost yielded yet another new directional surprise,
another look at the map and a collective "Where the fuck are we?"
Eventually we ended up somewhere ... and that somewhere just happened to
be La Roche-en-Ardenne.
Of course, it wouldn't be a
road trip if you had planned ahead and booked yourself a hotel for the
night. We didn't and I spent half an hour walking around trying to
find accommodation for the night.
Town And Castle (Country)
Thirty odd kilometres
north-west from Bastogne, La Roche-en-Ardenne is a vibrant little town,
hidden in a small valley, crowned by a ruined castle and surrounded by
verdant hills much enjoyed by hikers. Not that we were in any mood
for hiking.

The Castle (no, not the aussie kind!) perches on a crag that overlooks the
town and dates from the 11th century. It was inhabited until 1780
when it was abandoned and fell into ruin.

You don't see guys like this walking down the streets every day!

The inner wall.

Entrance to the inner castle. And Anka.

Looking down into the interior of the castle. Rock is very much a
feature of the castle and the castle incorporates it into it's design.

View of the town from the top of the castle.

Anka looking happy.
